Range Rover Fun Facts

  • Land Rover debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948; the original Range Rover followed in June 1970, marketed as "A Car For All Reasons."
  • In 1971 the Range Rover was exhibited at the Louvre in Paris as an exemplary work of industrial design — and a year later, two Range Rovers became the first vehicles ever driven across the roadless Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia.
  • Range Rovers weren't officially sold in the United States until 1987 — early ones here were gray-market imports.
  • Today's Range Rover family spans four models: the full-size Range Rover, the Sport, the Velar, and the Evoque — and we service all of them, from Classics to current models.

Range Rover History

The original Range Rover — now known as the Classic — launched in June 1970 with a 3.5-liter Rover V8, permanent four-wheel drive, and a brief that no vehicle had managed before: genuinely capable off-road, genuinely comfortable on it. It began as a two-door (a four-door didn't arrive until 1981) and stayed in production for an extraordinary 26 years. Late Classics introduced electronic air suspension in 1992, a feature that has defined the Range Rover ride — and a fair share of our repair work — ever since.

The second-generation P38a (1994–2001) brought 4.0- and 4.6-liter V8s, standard air suspension, and a major step up in luxury. It also brought notoriously temperamental electronics; if you own one, you already know. The third-generation L322 (2002–2012) was developed during BMW's ownership and was the first Range Rover built on a unibody with fully independent suspension, carrying BMW engines early on and Jaguar V8s from 2006.

The fourth-generation L405 (2012–2021) made headlines as the first SUV with an all-aluminum body, shedding hundreds of pounds while adding technology like Terrain Response 2. The current fifth-generation L460 arrived in 2022 with plug-in hybrid options and the most advanced chassis electronics the nameplate has ever carried.

Along the way, Range Rover grew from a single model into a full family: the Range Rover Sport (2005), the compact Evoque (2011), and the Velar (2017). Every generation has its own personality — and its own known weak points, from EAS faults on the older trucks to complex electrical and cooling systems on the newer ones. We've worked on all of them, and that experience is exactly what you want in the shop that maintains yours.
